For the 2005 event, we held four seminars
at beautiful "view sites" to give a complete picture of
the appellation as a whole. Climate & Soils provided
the essential information on the defining fog, temperature fluctuations,
geologic history and a rundown on the predominant soil types. History
of the Area & Viticulture showed how crops have evolved
and when pinot was first planted, as well as covered current trends
in spacing, rootstocks, trellising, small vines, cover crops, clones
and overal farming philosophies. Winemaking Trends covered
topics such as ripeness, cold soak, new techniques like adding enzymes,
fermentation vessels, oak and closures. The Flavor Profile of
Russian River Pinot showed both blends and vineyard-designated
wines and presented the key characteristics of the appellation.
