The Martinelli family has been farming in Sonoma County since 1860. We began our American history in agriculture by raising sheep, cattle, potatoes, walnuts, prunes, apples, and wine grapes. The ancient apple orchards and vineyards, along with new vineyard plantings, are the family's prevailing crops. The lofty view on top of the Jackass Hill vineyard has not changed much since 1899 when Giuseppe & Luisa Martinelli planted the first vines there. The original centurion houses and barns are still in use today by the family. All of the wines we make are produced from estate grown grapes which are farmed by Lee Martinelli Sr., and sons, Lee, Jr. and George; continuing five generations of the proud family legacy of care-taking the land.
Martinelli Winery produces small lots of wine from our outstanding single vineyards. In the creation process of our wines we work exclusively with our wine maker, Helen Turley, and viticulturist, John Wetlaufer from beginning to end; analyzing soil samples, choosing rootstocks, varietals and clones that are best matched to a particular growing site, seasonal primping and pruning in the field, and the final blends for the finished wine. Each of our vineyards are heavily thinned to yield between one to three tons of fruit per acre. At harvest time the grapes are hand selected according to taste and are fermented with wild yeast in small French oak barrels. Our wines are minimally handled with true handcrafted artistry; they are neither hot nor cold stabilized, and are unfined and unfiltered.
The Martinelli tasting room and gift shop is situated in a historic hop barn which has been kept authentic since its heyday at the turn-of-the-century. Here we feature our estate wines along with a wide selection of gourmet foods produced locally in Sonoma County. Our tasting room also houses a variety of gifts including local art, clothing, books, pottery, and chocolate truffles. Our mailing list is offered twice yearly, featuring our newly released estate wines.
