Rodney D. Strong founded Rodney Strong Vineyards in 1959. He was sourcing prime vineyard land at a time when California wines had yet to be recognized as world-class. Rod was one of the first modern wine pioneers to plant Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley in 1968. Because of Rod's vision our winemaker, Rick Sayre, and viticulture specialist, Doug McIlroy, have some of the best vineyards in Sonoma County, and specifically the Russian River Valley, from which to source fruit.

In 1989 the Klein family, a fourth generation farming family, purchased the winery. The Klein family passionately follows Rod's vision today and has provided the winery with among other vineyard land, a showcase vineyard for Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley, Jane's Vineyard.
